DECORATIVE SHELF BRACKETS

Measure the shelf from wall to front edge, then pick a bracket the same depth or up to two inches shorter. That leaves a small front overhang, gives the wood a “floating” look, and keeps the load centered over the screws. A ten-inch-deep shelf pairs well with an eight- to ten-inch Eclipse or Parsons bracket. If you land between sizes, round down rather than up. The steel is plenty strong, but letting it sit slightly back from the edge hides the metal and protects shins.

It is best not to. Designer shelf brackets are drilled and welded to work with the long leg under the shelf and the short leg against the wall. Turning them 90 degrees shifts the load away from the welded gusset and cuts capacity. The holes also stop lining up with a standard stud, which means you may miss solid wood. If you want a different look, choose a square “L” style or ask about a made-to-order part that is built for that orientation.

Yes. Most styles have two countersunk holes on top and three on the back. The factory drills them for a #10 or #14 wood screw, roughly ¼-inch in diameter. For wall mounting run at least a #10 × 2-inch lag into the stud. On the shelf side a shorter #8 × ¾-inch flat head keeps the wood from sliding. If your order ships without hardware, any good deck screw in those sizes will do. Just seat the head flush so the shelf rests flat.

In some cases we can stretch an Eclipse bracket to, say, 14 × 16 inches, but anything outside the regular size chart adds lead time and cost. Narrower steel, like three-quarter-inch strap, is not something we offer because it twists under load. If you need an odd dimension check the 2-inch-wide corbel range first, then email the shop with your drawing. If we can’t bend it in house, we will point you to a local fabricator who can.
